Color psychology is extremely important in the world of fashion and interior design for its extraordinary beauty and the effects it has on our mood and emotions.  The colors of food can also have an essential effect on our physical and emotional state.  What color of the rainbow are you craving?

“Homegrown” is the emerging new trend.   Individuals are seeking out Farmer’s markets in their local communities to purchase fresh produce and home baked goods that are not loaded with chemicals and preservatives.  We are starting to see lawns being replaced by vegetable gardens – even at the White House.  The colors of a purple egg plant, red strawberry, yellow squash and dark leafy greens deliver natural goodness and provide healing and vitalizing energy.

We are always drawn to the brightest colored fruits and vegetables when selecting produce.  The bright colors indicate the produce to be fresh and best tasting.  Scientists have proven the brightest foods to have the highest nutritional value.  When we choose specific colored foods, it can rejuvenate and bring balance to your system giving your body more energy.  Dieticians often suggest a rainbow diet.

Strawberry - Red FruitRED FOODS: support the body by increasing levels of vitality, with foods that are rich in minerals and a good source of protein. Contain nutrients such as lycopene, ellagic acid, Quercetin, and Hesperidin, to name a few. These nutrients reduce the risk of prostate cancer, lower blood pressure, reduce tumor growth and LDL cholesterol levels, scavenge harmful free-radicals, and support join tissue in arthritis cases.  Possible signs if someone has red deficiencies: lack of stamina, anemic, weak and light-headedness.

EAT RED:
Vegetables: beat, red cabbage, radishes, red chilli peppers, red bell peppers, tomatoes, red onions

EAT ORANGE:
Vegetables: Carrot, pumpkin, pepper, rutabaga, potato, butternut squash
Fruit: orange, apricots, peaches, persimmon, kumquats, mango

Orange/Yellow Foods: Contain beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, flavonoids, lycopene, potassium, and vitamin C. These nutrients reduce age-related macula degeneration and the risk of prostate cancer, lower LDL cholesterol and blood pressure, promote collagen formation and healthy joints, fight harmful free radicals, encourage alkaline balance, and work with magnesium and calcium to build healthy bones.

YELLOW FOODS: support the body, by taking on the warm vibration of the sun. Most people working long hours indoors, with minimal sun exposure tend to deplete their yellow energy. EAT GREEN:
Vegetables: Broccoli, cabbage, kale, sprouts, peas, green beans, leeks and dark leafy vegetables
Fruit: Pears, avocados, apples, green grapes, kiwi and limes

EAT BLUE-VIOLET:  Violet foods are rich in vitamin D.
Vegetables: Oats, eggplant, shell fish, red cabbage, beats, purple onion, purple carrots, purple potatoes, purple cabbage, purple asparagus
Fruit: Figs, dates, purple plums, purple grapes, passion fruit, mulberries
Other Foods: Kelp and all seaweed products

WHITE FOODS:  Contain nutrients such as beta-glucans, EGCG, SDG, and lignans that provide powerful immune boosting activity. These nutrients also activate natural killer B and T cells, reduce the risk of colon, breast, and prostate cancers, and balance hormone levels, reducing the risk of hormone-related cancers.  White is associated with the top of the color spectrum (crown chakra) and, in Asian medicine, with strengthening to the lungs and large intestines. White foods are often rich in sulfur and quercetin.

EAT WHITE:
Vegetables: Cauliflower, white beans, white corn , white eggplant , white onions , white radishes , white tomatoes, turnip, mushrooms,

Other Foods:  Quinoa, white sesame seeds

BLACK FOODS:  Black foods are associated with the kidneys and bladder in Asian medicine.  Foods that are black in color are usually rich in minerals.

Vegetables: Black beans , black flax seed, seaweeds, wild rice
Other: Black sesame seeds, black quinoa
