I hope everyone was fortunate enough to have a healthy and enjoyable holiday. It is that time of year when all the stress of shopping, and preparations of the holiday season seem to get the best of everyone. Well this year in our household was no exception, with the temperature on a constant slide down it brought the onset of the common cold. Sick kids, with coughing, stuffed up and running noses, fevers and OMG the crying and sleepless nights. After almost two weeks of this, we are almost back to normal. Everyone hates feeling like crap, as adults we can relate and know exactly how our children feel. Although there is no cure for the common cold, there are so me ways to ease the symptoms. Vitamin C – A daily dose of vitamin C-75 mg for adults and 35 mg for children will help prevent the common cold. However, if a cold has already appeared a larger dose of this vitamin will relieve the symptoms and shorten the duration. At the first sign of a cold, try taking one or two 500 mg tablets of vitamin C and continue to take this amount daily for the duration of the cold.

Lemon – Lemon is beneficial in all types of colds. The juice of the lemon is a high source of Vitamin C, which will decrease toxicity and help reduce the length of the cold. Take one lemon and dilute it in a glass of warm water with a teaspoon of honey. This can be taken twice daily.

Garlic – The famous garlic cure, garlic helps open up the respiratory tract. Garlic has a natural anti-biotic and anti-fungal medicinal compound, allicin, which forms when garlic is crushed or chopped finely. It helps to flush out toxins and bring down fevers. The traditional garlic soup; boil 3-4 cloves of chopped garlic in a cup of water and take once daily. Another method that has been found to be effective has been to take 5 drops of garlic oil combined with a teaspoon of onion juice, and diluted in a cup of water and drink 2-3 times per day.

Ginger – Ginger has been another remedy used in treating colds and coughs. It is also used to alleviate nausea. Cut a small amount of ginger into pieces and boil in a cup of water, strain and drink tea hot.

There are many different techniques individuals use to help overcome cold symptoms as fast as they can. Steam baths, humidifiers, breathing in Vicks steam vapor or adding a couple drops of eucalyptus oil on your pillow also prove to be effective methods of treatment.

Drink plenty of fluids – hot teas, fruit and vegetable juices, maintain a well balanced diet, abstain from sugar as it lowers immunity and get lots of rest!
